@philosophyminis: Expectations can feel heavy, and it's easy to feel like we are being crushed by the weight of our 'potential.' It's easy to feel guilty for 'wasting' our time, or for letting the days go by without maximising every opportunity earnestly, and aggressively. We feel like we are failing, like we are being left behind, and we are missing out. But in his book Four Thousand Weeks, Oliver Burkeman offers a way to reframe and to deal with this. It's known as Cosmic Insignificance Therapy. Burkeman argues that we have internalised a secret and bloated expectation that our lives should be meaningful on a global, or even universal, scale. And so we treat our short time on Earth as if it were an exam we have to pass, and we are desperately ticking boxes before they vanish. But Burkeman asks us to zoom out. See your life as your grandchildren would see it — as distant and boring trivia. See your life as people from the year 3000 would see it — as a data point on a spreadsheet called '2026.' In even 100 years, no one will care about your optimised morning routine, or what you said in that meeting. The universe doesn't care about peak productivity. When you accept your own insignificance, the pressure to be more evaporates. You can stop trying to conquer time and actually start living it. The universe isn't waiting for you to do something big or grand. It isn't waiting at all. So take a deep breath and enjoy what's going on. We're doing okay.

Our significance to the members of our family and community is the only thing that matters. My insignificance, from the perspective of the universe, is insignificant to me.

Disagree. This disencourages people from achieving new limits. Our goal in life is to feel important and create meaning, however that may be

Except…. Just as in physics, what is true at one scale may not be true at another. At the cosmic scale, we can find meaning in how small we are. And yet, at the daily existential level, meaning is constructed in our choices. At that level, all that matters is our choices.

I love the idea and it’s quite freeing for sure. But what’s the argument for the invers? That no matter what we do, nothing matters. So we might as well do nothing? 🤔 just as a thought.

Or, you can feel you don't make a big difference and let injustice carry on. I believe everything makes a difference.

I realized I was comfortable with this view of my own life's importance fairly early on. My struggle is that I haven't figured out how to not care about people judging me for it 🥺

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, goes together with determinism. Why should I stress about doomscrolling when it’s the only way it could’ve ever been. It’s all temporary, the atoms have conformed together to create me for a 100 years then they will move on to their next conformation, I am simply playing my part in the universe

I wonder if one must view oneself as an active agent or the star of the show to feel there's a meaning for this world on a day-to-day basis
