I largely agree with you’re assessment. That being said I think painting with such a broad brush in saying that China is combating “Terrorism” or “Radicalization” is often times regressive in its framing and similar to what we have seen in the post “ War on Terror” framing of the middle east. While the caveat about the effectiveness of the these programs is important. I do feel it’s necessary to mention that at the core “Radical” ideas is still a often overlooked aspects of Islamic culture that often times only become radical when there is larger issues that are unresolved issues. I think that this is often ignored by the CCP’s approach to Xinjiang often just wanting the Uyghurs to be be more like the Hui and just to be Chinese but also Muslim and ignoring what being Muslim means to them as cultural signifier leading to the various separatist and terrorist organizations among the population.
