As a South Asian, I’m getting irritated by people trying to use Lara as a way to shut down this conversation. They’re not slow. They know exactly what they’re doing. It’s a way to shut down anyone pointing out that the way Manon is being treated is rooted in anti-Blackness. We’ve seen this before. Barack Obama is mixed, yet he was still treated in deeply racist ways and widely referred to as the first Black president. No matter how much people try to complicate conversations about mixed identity, society often racialises people as Black and treats them accordingly. Pretending otherwise just minimises what’s happening. If they want to have conversations about Lara and Danielle, they can do that without derailing conversations about Manon. But they don’t. Instead, they use this excuse to dismiss and silence discussions about the insidious way she’s being treated.
