When you are dyslexic you become familiar with the feeling of shame. The shame of being slower than everyone else, the shame of making that typo again or that error despite proofreading! the shame of not understanding something, the shame of not being able to pronounce a word, the shame of using the wrong word, the shame of interpreting the email incorrectly, the shame of missing the appointment… again! This feeling of shame is 1 million times stronger when you don’t realise that these things are happening because you’re dyslexic. Sometimes this is because you don’t even realise what you are experiencing is Dyslexia. Sometimes it’s because even though someone’s been identified as having Dyslexia no one’s really explained to them what that looks like or feels like. And the shame sits dormant inside of you, holding you back and eating away at you inside… Until you become so small no one notices you and you are so within your comfort zone your strengths and potential becomes invisible. The best way to tackle that shame is to own those mistakes and bring them into the open, talk about them find out why they happen and normalise them! That way the shame can’t thrive and instead you build awareness and understanding of both yourself and your effort! I have learned to do this and it’s such a privilege that I now get to help other dyslexics do this too through the mentoring and coaching I do… I get to see adults liberated from dyslexia and feeling free for the first time in years and that’s pretty special’
