I collect petrified wood and this is the first piece I have ever found that has a black colored mineral. Do you know what it is? Maybe smoky quartz?

how about you go to south louisiana where you can find almost all of those. I have. louisiana opal, petrified palm is black and red, agate is all over and red jasper. pyrite inclusions. so much.

You can find some opalized petrified wood in western North Dakota/ eastern Montana as well near teddy roosevelt national park!

I find some killer black PW on the north coast of Humboldt. The wood grain patterns are very visible after being polished by the sea. It’s rare after years of looking I have only found 3 pieces

A lot of these varieties of petrified wood can be found in lots of places. Opalized petrified wood for example is actually quite common but the play of color material is much more rare.
