the idea that computer science will be completely made obsolete and writing will be left alone is delusional

CS is falling because too many damn people went into it at once trying to think it’s good easy money

There's going to be little need to know how to code.

LLMs are not replacing engineers, that is the substruct of what CEOs want to achieve. they are currently letting their tech stack get polluted to permanent garbage by slop code so they don't have to hire humans to fix it, and that can only go on for so long. once the AI bubble bursts (it will happen almost certainly this year) there will be a mad rush to hire humans to rewrite the slop code that can't be fixed because it's so so fundamentally flawed. most people aren't aware that LLMs are trained on public code bases, of which 99% are absolute useless garbage; which is why actual SWE's don't touch AI coding tools because it takes 10x longer to fix the garbage LLMs output than it does to write it yourself.

My gf was full on studying to go be an entry level coder at Google.. it took me months to open her eyes to AI taking that role now.. but where will the future top coders get experience?

CS is very oversaturated, and companies are off-shoring to save on costs. That's a bigger factor than AI. The current gen "AI" isn't capable of replacing people, and without a significant shift in how the models are designed, the next gen won't be able to either.

The layoffs of software developers done in the name of AI were really done to boost quarterly profits. Having worked with the coding agents as a developer, it’s pretty clear to me that AIs are not replacing developers anytime soon.

I think it may end up the opposite because the ability to code your own app for internal use and have it managed / maintained by someone might spike as people move to small nimble vertical apps vs large behemoth saas apps

Tech will extract from humanities just like they did the engineers and the creators. It’s all an extraction loop. But yes humanities because we are human.

companies are typically aiming to recruit cs backgrounds with graduate degrees or ones that graduated before chatgpt era. the reason is those graduates tend to have a better understanding of the field. as someone who has a graduate degree in comp eng I can say I still get offers from a lot of companies I worked with in the past and its not headhunters or recruiters its bc of my experience. AI has ruined the quality of programmers coming out of college a lot of them use AI as a crutch so they dont really know how to code themselves. yes AI does have potential to remove a lot of programming jobs but a lot of big companies do not want AI code to be their final product because it comes with a lot of security threats. they use AI to verify their code but they still rather have actual coders do the work. the reason you are seeing a decrease in cs jobs is because they adjusted the amount of r&d tax write off for companies. originally it was increased so tech companies hired a lot of engineers to take advantage of it but since the benefits have almost completely vanished year after year they have been decreasing their work force.

I have a coworker that got a degree in computer science he’s struggling to even find an internship here. I don’t know how he does in school but he’s a pretty smart dude, and he will work a crazy amount of hours. Which makes me believe it’s not a him issue.

I work for a very large popular tech company and honestly if you don’t keep up with what’s going on, you’re obsolete by the time you get the job. New technology new people are always coming in and out
