I feel like this about a lot of musicians too. I am happy to be friends with musicians but never date. My mother was the person paying all the bills for my (washed up) musician stepfather. 😩

LOL, I’m a climber and I’ve never wanted to date climbers either but I couldn’t name why until now. This makes total sense. And a lot of them prioritize climbing over their careers.

I live near Whistler and Squamish Canada and all of this is true! The climbing culture has hugely impacted the dating culture in the lower mainland. Even guys with jobs with responsibilities have all encompassing hobbies that are prioritized over everything. It’s the perfect excuse.

The more you enlighten me, the more I realize I just pure lucked out that my outdoorsman husband is the way he is & that he even listens to me, let alone at a deep level. We’ve bounced around everywhere together and then I got hit by disability & we relocated to my ancestral homeland- a language he doesn’t even speak (he’s actively learning dw)- & I don’t work bc I’m fully fxcking disabled & he works his aaaaaaaaassssssss off, cooks every meal, is the main parent, does all the cleaning, clothes, like he does EVERYTHING. I seem like Patricia Pan on paper or even at first impression til someone realizes how effed my body is (EDS, ME/CFS *&* Long ‘vid & MCAS & my spine dislocates and my brain is sticking into my neck- Chiari- my body is trashed at 33)

And of course his “Hobby” will also take up the majority of the family income! Everything will be the top of the line or the “professional” grade equipment. With My Ex it was computers/audio/visual tec and gaming AND racing sports cars. Continuous upgrades and improvements, lessons, track days new tyres etc, etc. Absolutely zero thought about risk and death/disability which wouldn’t have been covered by his life insurance. We had two daughters, he didn’t care one bit. He wasn’t even any good at racing, he crashed every new car he ever owned and that was off the track. Being dragged along to freezing, dirty, noisy race meets bloody miles away every single weekend/holiday! If I didn’t play loving, proud wifey the fallout and ramifications were unbearable. I resented him so much I got to the stage where I’d literally daydream of him dying and that made it bearable. Been divorced 16 years now and sadly he’s still not dead but here’s hoping 🤞🏻

You’re spot on. Dated a man who worked in radio, moved all the time, and 10 years older than me in my late 20s. It was like dating a teenager, I was young but even then I was so far ahead of him mentally, emotionally, financially.

I'm a touring musician and no way would I ever date a musician, especially a man and especially one that isn't actively performing regularly. I KNOW how hard it is to maintain relationships doing what I do and it often does mean running yourself a little ragged if you want to keep love and friendship on the table... and so many men just think all they have to do is be a "free spirit"
