@chonkyseal123: I also would make an exception to this for crimes of hate, ie racism, sexism, etc. Accountability is really good! However I don’t think it’s good that we live in this panopticon where the threat of, like, worldwide shaming is sort of dangling over our heads at any given moment. Idk #discussion #foodforthought #fyp
it's a surveillance state issue. and everybody wanting to police to escape everyday opression.

most people have done at least one thing they would be publicly shamed for if it had been captured on video but they conveniently don't seem to think about that when it happens

I think your take is one informed by empathy, which many are lacking, especially in internet spaces.

I did a research paper for a college class about public shaming that completely changed my view on cancel culture. I would highly recommend the book So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson. It discusses this very topic.

I also don’t think mugshots should be public until a conviction is made

I totally agree. maybe controversial but I felt that way when that lady who fell in love with her psychiatrist became really popular. not that I think she’s a good person or anything but I felt like all the attention she was getting made the whole situation worse. we live in a surveillance state and I feel like a lot of us online are so quick to become internet vigilantes

I think the general public is stressed out and are using random targets to release their bottled up emotions. I think they get a weird rush from it. I think it is frightening to watch society move in the direction it is going.

It’s also a distraction from the bigger issues. The people we should all be public shaming and canceling are the criminals in government and the culprits in the Epstein files

Girl don’t get me started on people using the Ray Ban glasses that record and then recording people without consent. I hate this cause not only does this gets feed into meta but also because when things like what your saying happens they use it to for views

I totally agree with this take. Because people on the Internet can become so unhinged, they end up taking it way too far

I think it’s crazy that I’m from an era where that wasn’t normal, we did not see the bloopers basically of your lives and so now if people do im like what? 😳 That’s the normal now?

It can quickly become more about pleasure in collective public shaming, and there’s often no distinction for the level of harm someone caused. I agree with you, there’s a time and place.

It’s not normal, the internet makes it so easy to blast people with either positivity or negativity that was never asked for. Mistakes are meant to be learned from, the internet turns that into anxiety and shame
