My MIL wanted to be cremated. We rented the casket for the viewing. She didnt want an open casket, so one we her immediate family viewed her. they closed the casket then a day or so later they cremated her.

When my husband passed I had 2 choices a coffin or a card board box no way was I choosing a card board box my husband was worth more than a card board box

We had a rental casket for my mom. It had a cardboard liner that was removed and cremated with her. We saved so much money and nobody knew any different. (Not in the USA)

I could never rent a casket reasons 1. other ppls loved ones have been inside it 2. what if u rent it for less time than the the funeral personly I think it could ruin the funeral and a cardboard box I couldnt
