LONA MISA X GRACIAS MADRE SOCAL , South Yarra To celebrate the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, South Yarra’s Lona Misa has teamed up with LA’s Gracias Madre for an incredible vegan Mexican takeover. With Gracias Madre’s Head Chef Dreux Ellis and Lona Misa’s Executive Chef Pamella Tomio, this collaboration delivers bold, plant-based Latin flavours in a way that truly impresses. What We Had: 🍹 Paloma: Refreshing and perfectly balanced, with a stunning colour. 🦀 Pastelitos de Palma – “Crab Cakes”, Avocado Crema, Spicy Aioli, Roasted Red Cabbage Slaw
Fantastic texture, the spicy aioli and roasted cabbage complemented it perfectly. 🍞 Olivada con Anchoas de Tomate – Potato Bread, Olive Paste, Tomato- Rich and smoky, with an incredible bread recipe passed down from Pamella’s mum. 🌽 Costillas de Elote – Corn Ribs, Crema de Ajo Blanco, Salsa Macha One of the highlights – beautifully spiced with an outstanding sauce. 🥑 Madre Ceviche – Hearts of Palm, Aguachile, Avocado, Cilantro, Aleppo Pepper, Tortilla Chips
A solid plant-based take on ceviche. Not my top pick, but still delicious, almost wouldn’t tell it didn’t include fish! The texture was so similar 🦑 Calamar de Coco Frito – Fried Coconut Calamari, Cilantro Gremolata, Salsa Roja, Salsa Verde- Crispy, flavourful, and a definite standout. 🌺 Flautas de Hibiscus – Flautas, Salsa Verde, Guacamole, Nacho Cheese, Parmesan
Crunchy, cheesy, and well-balanced. 🍮 Crema Catalan – Sweet Rice & Spiced Horchata Cream with Torched Caramel- just okay for me, the crunch on top was perfect though & the biscuit paired with it. A must-try for anyone who loves Mexican and Latin- American inspired flavours. The dishes were well-executed, flavourful, and showed how indulgent vegan food can be!
