Me when people with social anxiety have social anxiety

Yeah, I avoid talking to people because of my social anxiety, not because I don’t want to. I don’t think other people understand what social anxiety feels like when they don’t have it. They’re always just like, “Well, just start talking to people,” but I have the same feeling talking to a random person that I get before going on a rollercoaster. Like I have to talk myself into it in the same way. I know I need to work on it, but part of me just wishes I was normal and didn’t feel that way at all. Like, if I’m going to ask the cashier how their day is going, I’ll constantly think about it before I do it and try to repeat it over and over in my head first. It’s like I have to pretend to be human. But I think I’m also neurodivergent in some ways; I’ve just never been diagnosed with anything.

i think part of it is the rise of surveillance. it has gotten to a point that we surveil one another. people are terrified to make a social faux pas because it could end up on tiktok with millions of likes. it didn’t used to be that way, not in the 2000s, not even just a few years ago before anything and anyone could go viral (ESPECIALLY people being “cringe”) bc of the algorithm

Exposure therapy, while useful for many people, can't be used willy nilly for most ppl and has to be led by a professional for many people with severe anxiety. I also feel it's a bit of a non issue in that it doesn't really affect you if a stranger doesn't want to talk to you. They should work on it but their impact on other ppl is often minimal

I have struggled with social anxiety literally my entire life. Unfortunately exposure therapy is one of the best if not only thing that actually helps cope with it. It’s really hard but you cannot expect to be a functioning member of society if you can’t hold a conversation with a stranger.

Yeah. There’s definitely real social anxiety that can be crippling for some people. But, people have forgotten that social skills are real skills you can grow in and should seek to grow in.

Everyone is so mean now. I stopped to pick up a delivery order at taco bell one day and when I walked up the counter I said and she looked at her friend and they both laughed. I was so baffled by that I could barely say why I was there, I just wanted out as quickly as possible

Its not social anxiety its social avoidance, that brews into "anxiety" because the brain tags it as unfamiliar, and our brains tend to avoid things that are not already familiar

I’m autistic and naturally hella introverted and seriously, just practicing being level-headed, kind, and attentive to cashiers and wait staff improved my social confidence tenfold. I still feel that baseline level of discomfort but the more scripts and rapport you build, the easier it becomes!

this is such an unpopular thing to say but you’re so right, social anxiety CAN be IMPROVED through exposure. it’s hard, and some days are worse than others, but it’s still so important to do

I stumbled across The Forbidden Codex of Influence by Julian Voss and I’ll never look at manipulation, desire and influence the same again.

I'm super socially anxious but I also love when strangers talk to me because it drags me out of my comfort zone. I hate it but I love it if that makes sense. I feel like those people stop the world becoming so insular.

I think we should all be honest so as a wearer of headphones in public I just don't want to talk to people because I don't find them interesting and the thing I'm listening to I actually care about

The issue is systemic and will never fully be gone until said system changes, like one can try their best, but social anxiety is kinda forced into people atp

I think these are 2 different types of people tbh because I have no social anxiety (obvi I get nervous talking to strangers but if I have to I don't find it difficult) but I have my headphones in bc I just don't wanna interact with the general public (I take one out when I'm in stores in case they ask me for a bag or receipt etc but I ain't having a long convo with them bc I just don't want to)

I’ve never struggled with social anxiety, but I will say that I cannot stand being talked to and I’m out in public. I like to be alone and I like to be left alone. I don’t bother people. I don’t strike up conversations and I just wish people would give me the same courtesy. But they don’t. So since they’re not honoring that, I just don’t respond to them sometimes. I just look at them when they say hi.

@rosegardenovermadisonsquare: I’m so serious when I say to overcome this you need to work a customer service job. When I was a teenager I had a lot of anxiety about talking to people and it helped me build those skills. 10 years later- I’m a high school teacher and tell my students it’s something they NEED to do

People forget that social skills are, in fact, skills that need to be constantly developed in order to improve and progress.
