This is how I felt about Saltburn too. The symbolism lacked clarity, the story was not surprising (it certainly wanted to be), felt contrived and unable to communicate anything intentionally without a voice over

I just did a re read become of the film. And the dog actually survives, Nelly finds the dog in time and Isabella is reunited with the dog when she runs away. AND (building on the point of the video in agreement) He literally says that she accepted his proposal AND THEN he hung the dog in front of her. He made sure she was under no illusions on his part and still she went. I understand this self delusion, I married my own Heathcliff. I fared better. thanks to luck.

It's amazing you're quoting the novel and still getting it wrong. Heathcliff doesn't kill the dog, he "hangs it up" and Nelly saves it. Isabella being chained liked a dog in the movie comes from the same paragraph in the book where Heathcliff says to Nelly, "But no brutality disgusted her: I suppose she has an innate admiration of it, if only her precious person were secure from injury! Now, was it not the depth of absurdity—of genuine idiocy—for that pitiful, slavish, mean-minded brach to dream that I could love her?” Brach being the word for a female hound. So, Fennel's interpretation of the character of Isabella comes directly from Brontë's words. Initially, no matter how cruel he was, she still went along with it.

That wink was so annoying. Let’s say Isabella did secretly want to stay with Heathcliff (which is indeed an argument that can be made from the text) it could have been more subtle.

i’m genuinely so confused why she made the choices she did. cause it really just seems that she really said “i’m doing it as what my 14 year old brain imagined would happen if i self inserted into the book and if i changed heathcliff to a white man instead.

I haven't seen the film yet but I have read the book. the more I hear about this film, I wonder why she didn't just call it something else? because it doesn't seem to connect to much of the themes and messages of the book

My guess would be that if she crosses from maiden to mother, the 14-year old fanfiction version ceases to exist. Arresting but to serve the film’s fantasy, arrested development.

One of the ways that she was trying to turn him into a romantic hero was by constantly referencing gone with the wind and 2005 pride and prejudice with the shots of Heathcliff and it was driving me crazy because he is neither Rhett nor Darcy and Catherine is not Elizabeth or Scarlett either; it just felt like really obvious references to hit us over the head with or perhaps the only two love stories she understands Idk. I think her constant comparisons of Catherine to Scarlett —even on the red carpet— is such a misread of both of those characters.

i think it is important to remember how emily brontë purposely modeled heathcliff after a byronic hero to deconstruct masculinity and a role of gentleman, compare it to linton's "weak" masculinity, and eventually reconstruct a man as hareton... fennell's creation of heathcliff and his "romantic" features feel just shallow as they don't have any purpose other than to appeal to the audience :/

Probably waaaay off - But I saw it as Cathy and Heathcliff poisoning everything and everyone around them. The child (in my interpretation) died when he married Isabella because Cathy was so distraught by it. Nelly not believing her is the same as in the book with her illness. The entire situation is so bad that even the most innocent of beings (aka unborn child) falls victim to it and Cathy never gets a chance to bring someone into the world that might end this generational curse. The scene with the blood is the last shred of hope dying
