@expedition.ola: Part 2/3 This is real life you guys. These are real decisions with real consequences, happening in real time. We were behind a stranger’s house in a not so great neighborhood, sitting in the dirt, trying to process what we were seeing. No Coldplay soundtrack playing in the background to make it feel hopeful. So this time I wanted you to feel it the way we experience it. There were so many things to observe and take into consideration before making any decisions. This mama had just given birth to eight puppies who are dependent on her. If we took her, they would not survive. That alone made that decision for us. We live in a camper. We cannot realistically rescue a litter of three week old puppies who can’t legally cross the border until six months of age. As heartbreaking as it is, taking them would mean six months of saying no to every other dog we find. This work is a marathon, not a race. It’s not about saving every dog we see. It’s about staying in the fight long enough to save as many as we can. We got to know the dad next. He was the only one who would let us touch him, and for a moment we thought maybe he could be the one we saved. But the longer we watched, the more we understood the role he plays. The older daughter was being harassed by an unfixed male dog from a neighboring house, and several times we watched the dad step in and fight those males off. He is the barrier between his family and the threats around them. Our hearts were heavy, and we realized we needed to step away so we could think clearly and not make a decision purely from emotion. We asked the man if he had food for the dogs. He told us he didn’t. So we went and bought dog food for the entire family while we talked through what the most responsible next move would be. Rescue isn’t just about who we can take. It’s about what happens after we leave. It’s about making the choice that creates the greatest positive impact for everyone involved. We cannot make decisions that feel good in the moment but cause more harm long term. These situations are layered and complicated. This isn’t rare. It’s the reality in so many places.

An option is to pay the people to keep them until they are 6mo - provide food and have them bring to vet to get their shots & vetting during the 6mo. Then bring them across.

Spaying the mother fixes one problem, sure. But saving the puppies, not to sound harsh, it solves more. It breaks the trauma cycle for four furry lives... they will grow out of the limited memories they have of privation, be well socialized, fit well into forever homes, and that will be four less babies *having* more strings of babies out on those streets. Mom my never have another litter. Those babies have years of exhausted and dangerous births ahead of them out there.
