Cocktails are an excellent business. Alcohol don’t go bad overnight and you work in an air conditioned place. Imagine making soup….

to be fair the cocktails are excellent at your bar 👌 I feel like the bakery equivalent to hitting the soup margin is putting one (1) strawberry on anything

You helped me realize why my coffee shop guy sells mostly drinks and barely any food items. I didn’t know how he was turning profit

this is super interesting! but what if you’re not a viral noodle shop? with the cost of overhead isn’t it still quite expensive to own and operate a restaurant

Bars have high margin. But coffeeshops don't. High cost usually comes from labor costs and rents. The reason why it's all over is bc there is a high demand and it's the easiest business for many ppl to start & the aesthetics and romanticism for coffee makes it less stressing to the ones who wanna start business after retirement or without any innovative idea. Most of the owners actually struggle to make enough profit, especially when it's a national chain. One of the most busy store of the popular coffeeshop brand makes way less net profit than some starting salaries in Korea. I was shocked. Plus, it's common for rich ppl to run a huge bakery coffeeshop to inherit their wealth to their kids without spending high tax. Cuz in case they invest in the store they aren't charged the transfer tax but if they just give the money or property then the transfer tax is like 50%. It's better to just open the coffeeshop either if it goes well or not.

on a vaguely related note I wish there were more non-alcoholic high ticket beverages so we could have fancy food places that didn't rely totally on alcohol to stay in business

for good soup, it takes time. could that be a significant cost? especially the stronger broths. gas/overhead??
