he was proving a point by not taking it - his solution was previously tried to be stolen by a group of scientists who “verified” his solution; the main guy stole the solution, said the Perelmans is incorrect and his is correct. He was not punished whatsoever. Also, Perelman based his solution on Richard Hamilton work - Perelman said that he (Hamilton) deserves the money, not Perelman.
