I currently have so many IEPs and 504s that I am now giving everyone modifications.
And when everyone is special, no one is.

I feel the accommodations for certain kinds of disabilities are important at a young age, but as the student gets older should be replaced with the personal accountability of learning to cope. after all isn’t the point of teaching kids how to function as adults. I have ADHD, and thru much trail and error have learned to get around many of the pitfalls.

A couple years ago there were threats being called into a local school district. The FBI along with every other local law enforcement agency were investigating and found the local student who at the time was an “adult”. When they went to the house to arrest him he said, “You can’t arrest me, I have an IEP!”

Picture it— 1988 Freshman Biology class, somewhere in Smalltown USA, you walk into class and you don’t turn in your homework as you walk in to class.. there’s no guessing what my grade was.. I knew it and the teacher knew I knew it.. turn it in late.. when did that sh*t start?

Not teaching kids how to deal with failure and rejection (everyone gets a trophy) is what caused a large part of our mental health crisis. These kids grow up and go into the real world, get fired, declined for employment, rejected from their college choice, and they have mental breakdowns. It’s why our youth are so soft these days. Giving behavior kids rewards for behaving just created more behavior kids because they connected the cause and effect dots really quickly.

And this is why in the real world we cannot find competent people to fill positions. Just think of the person trying to give you your change at the register.

I want to hear your take on grades in general. I’m 44 and remember the valedictorian race being between only a few students that managed to have straight A’s throughout HS. But my HS child (who does study constantly and work hard to get A’s) is part of nearly 20% of her class that has straight A’s through several years of HS so far. A’s. There’s no way 20% of students should have straight A’s throughout HS.

make school a learning experience! not just a testing site! teach things they need in life!!! as well as reading, writing and arithmetic.

My daughter has autism. Level 1 “high functioning” she has an IEP in 2nd grade. I don’t want her to coddled. I want her to grow up and be a happy independent functioning adult. Life can be hard and challenging. We do speech, OT, social skills and play therapy.

I understand the need for IEP’s. I also know if students are not held to a higher standard and pushed to conquer their own boundaries they are being taught that mediocrity is ok. Then you have kids who could live a successful life living in their parents house unable to take care of themselves.

My daughter has an IEP they wanted to give her more time on test. I told them no. They pushed back on this. I told them when she gets a job they don't giver her more time to do a task be cause she has ADHD. she needs to learn to get task done in the time given. The school finally agreed.

My son had a IEP in HS. I never let him use it as a crutch. It was there for him if he needed it, not to abuse it.
