as a general rule of thumb, i read the book first for experience and immersion and dog ear pages that move me or pages that I want to annotate. I then go back to those pages or reread the entire book after to look at it objectively. Def more time consuming tho

actually in literature they teach you to annotate while you read! but we are also told to re-read a lot so it may change depending on the genre of the book and the reader

the main reason i started annotating is because i used to read books so fast that the second i finished it i couldn't tell you a thing about it. It made me slow down and consume what i was reading and think about it. I don't annotate every book i read but it has helped me a lot

You can also annotate by chapter! Read it first then go back to annotate! That’s how i would do it!

I'm kind of the opposite. I slow down to annotate so I can feel and understand the story better. Interpreting or comprehending it on my mind tires me easily, so by writing some stuff down I can properly understand it. It could be a skill issue (on my part) honestly 😅 but I'm amazed at people who don't feel the need to annotate

I tag the pages with a colored tab then come back to annotate afterwards UNLESS im annotating my predictions

What I usually do is highlight or tab sections as I’m reading, then continue without stopping. After I finish reading, I go back to the sections I marked and start annotating them. That way, it doesn’t interrupt the flow of my reading. Hope this helps!✨

my personal rule is that if it’s a fun and easy fictional read, i won’t really annotate it. but if it’s more literary, educational, or a classic, i usually sit down to annotate it. i feel likehaving to write down ny opinions and thoughts on certain topics I want to learn more about, annotating gives me that extra depth

Something I had to start being conscious of was not just annotating for the sake of it. I remind myself it’s okay to annotate a few pages in a row and then go chapters and chapters without writing anything. I’m not in English anymore there’s no pressure to take notes if I don’t need to, I can just note/highlight/tab what I want when I want and as often as I want to, and that’s helped me balance analysis and immersing a lot better 😅
