My boss told me I wasn’t going to feel “confident” for a least a year and to ask for permission later bc I don’t work and healthcare and no one is going to die bc I mess up. I LOVED THAT it was so freeing to hear.

I tell everyone I hire that you will leave every day feeling overwhelmed and confused for at least 6 months. At a year you will think you have it all together (and you won’t) and by 18 months it will all fully click and you will be a rockstar but that every step of the way from day one you are a valued member of the team. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes even when you think you have it all figured out. Most mistakes can fixed and what can’t be fixed can be forgiven.

I was at a job for a month. They said id been there for a month and that me maing mistake was inexcusable after a month. Crushed me completely.

Damn that sounds nice. I was one month into my new job and my boss told me they will fire me if I ask one more question. I quit the day after.

I was told this at my new job and then they proceeded to berate me 3 months in for being a slow learner 🫠

“You’re gonna make a lot of mistakes, it’s inevitable, so just fix it and move on” was mine and it helped so much with my anxiety for the job. I did in fact make a lot of mistakes, but I’m still here 3 years later

You mean "we hired you because we knew you're willing to learn and cost us 1/2 the salary of someone who had the experience"

I owe everything to the people who took that chance on me. They could’ve hired someone who was already skilled, but they believed in my potential and I’ll always be grateful for that❤️

That's %100. When I trained my replacement when I got promoted, she would get so frustrated with herself that she had to ask again. I assured her that I struggled in the beginning too, and would day it would suddenly click. Now she asks me a question, that she answers herself before I respond. She's got this, because she was never afraid to ask.

I tell all of our new hires you won’t understand anything the first 6 months even when you think you do you still have a lot more to learn

Mistakes are just unplanned learning opportunities. If someone gives you a hard time over them, then it's a them issue and don't let it get to you.

Great advice. Too many companies stick you on probation and treat it like a mine field waiting for mistakes 👌

Unfortunately the best way to learn is by making mistakes. I’m on a project now that should have required more hand holding than I got as a new designer and I’ve learned so much from having my submissions torn apart be engineers. It’s in no way comfortable, but the review is the safety guard, and every time we mess up we learn how to be better
