The Artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus stellatus) literally fires its spores. It builds pressure… then suddenly turns itself inside out and launches a sticky spore packet up to 6 meters (20 ft) - aiming toward light. Yes - it actually aims. Thank you for all the comments! I can’t reply to them all, but I can tell you something here:Many have asked about the popping sound and just to be transparent, it’s a SFX I added. But interestingly, they actually seem to make a tiny sound when they fire - which honestly makes this fungus even more fascinating. The Artillery Fungus builds up internal pressure and then suddenly turns itself inside out, launching its spore packet in a fraction of a second. It happens so fast the naked eye can barely see it… which is why we’re trying to capture it properly in slow motion.
