On September 15, a federal judge again blocked the Kennedy Center board from putting Donald Trump’s name on the building, ruling that the proposal conflicted with federal law and the court’s previous order. The next day, Trump told reporters that his administration deserved “recognition” for supporting and renovating the Kennedy Center. He then said that without it, the Kennedy Center would close and “end up being ripped down.” Later, he was photographed aboard Air Force One looking at a large rendering that appeared to say “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED.” And that sequence of events is what makes my mind go somewhere very specific. Because women know this pattern of language. If I can’t have what I want from you, something bad might happen to you. If I don’t get the recognition I believe I deserve, maybe I stop helping you. If I can’t have it on my terms, maybe nobody gets to have it. THAT is the connection I’m making with the keys. Women are taught from the time we are young to recognize entitlement that turns into anger when somebody hears “no.” We learn to watch body language. We learn to notice escalation. We learn to pay attention when someone responds to a boundary with a threat. We walk through parking lots differently because of it. And no, a national performing arts center is not a woman walking through a parking lot. The situations are obviously not literally the same. I’m talking about the pattern of rhetoric. A federal court said no. Trump talked about the recognition he believes his administration deserves. Then he talked about the Kennedy Center potentially being “ripped down.” And now a federal judge has stepped in again. On September 17, Judge Christopher Cooper ordered that the Kennedy Center must provide at least 30 days’ notice before taking steps toward demolition or making other major physical changes to the building. The Kennedy Center itself has said that “nothing is being demolished” and says its current closure is related to urgent safety concerns and structural deterioration. So no, there is not currently a court-approved plan to demolish the Kennedy Center. But when the President of the United States publicly connects receiving recognition with whether one of the country’s major cultural institutions survives, I think the language itself deserves attention. Women have spent our entire lives learning to pay attention to what happens after someone is told no. That’s what this post is about #washingtondc #kennedycenter
