@thejournaling_therapist: A common symptom of “just right” OCD is rumination. Rumination can function as a mental compulsion. It’s repeatedly reviewing the past, imagining alternative outcomes, and attempting to mentally curate a “perfect” life trajectory. The obsession often centers around: “Am I living the best life possible?” The compulsion becomes: Rewriting history in the mind. In this example, a traumatic event occurred: being chased by a man. The intrusive thought becomes: “My life would be better if that never happened.” This reflects mental filtering, focusing only on an imagined best-case alternative while ignoring that outcomes could have been different, neutral, or even worse. The problem isn’t acknowledging that something painful happened. The problem is the compulsive attempt to mentally edit it. When rumination becomes a compulsion: • It increases anxiety about the future • It creates paralysis around present decisions (fear of making the “wrong” life-altering choice) • It reinforces the belief that a perfect version of life exists if only the past had been different But the past cannot be curated. The work is not rewriting history, it’s changing the relationship to the thought. The balanced perspective: The past is fixed. The future is uncertain. The only controllable variable is the present response. Rumination promises certainty and perfection. Acceptance builds psychological flexibility. #OCDeducation #justrightOCD #rumination #journalwithme #therapytiktok
