never used to be scared of falling asleep at school. Until the day I slept for too long. It was the last class of the day, and I was exhausted. I put my head down for what I thought would be a few minutes. When I opened my eyes, the classroom was empty. I sat up, confused. The lights were still on, but the hallway outside was completely silent. I grabbed my phone. 3:00 PM. I thought that was strange, but I figured everyone had already gone home. I packed my bag and walked into the hallway. Every classroom was empty. No teachers. No students. Not even the sound of the janitor. I walked downstairs. The front doors were locked. I tried pulling them open. Nothing. Then I heard a voice behind me. “You’re still here?” I turned around. A man was standing near the end of the hallway. He looked like one of the teachers. I asked him if he could unlock the doors. He just smiled. “You can’t leave yet.” I asked why. He pointed toward the clock. 3:00. “The school doesn’t let students leave at 3:00.” I looked at him. “School ends at 3:00.” His smile disappeared. “No.” He said it quietly. “School ends when the bell rings.” I waited for the bell. It never rang. The man walked away. I followed him because I didn’t want to be alone in the hallway. He turned a corner. I followed. Nobody was there. I checked every classroom. Nothing. Then I heard the school bell. I ran toward the front entrance. The doors were suddenly unlocked. I pushed them open and ran outside. My mom was waiting in the parking lot. She looked terrified. She asked where I had been. I told her I had fallen asleep in class and woke up at 3:00. She stared at me. Then she said, “You didn’t wake up at 3:00.” I checked my phone. The time had changed. 6:42 PM. I thought my phone was broken. Then my mom showed me the school office had called her. They said I had never been in the building after dismissal. I looked back at the school. Every light was off. The next morning, I asked my teacher about the man I had seen. She didn’t know who I meant. I described him. She went quiet. Then she showed me an old staff photo. He was standing in the back row. My teacher told me he had been a teacher there. But he died twelve years ago. I looked at the picture again. He was wearing the exact same clothes I had seen. Then I noticed something I hadn’t seen before. The clock behind him showed 3:00. My teacher took the photo away. She whispered, “Nobody who falls asleep in that classroom stays asleep for just a few minutes.” I asked what she meant. She didn’t answer. She just told me something I’ll never forget. “Next time you wake up and it’s 3:00…” She looked toward the empty hallway. “Don’t talk to anyone.” Because the person I talked to that day… was never a real person
