@curtisagardner: The first time you do a repair should be the worst time you ever do it. Flat rate isn’t just about speed. It’s about compounding skill. If you lose time the first time, that’s part of learning. If you lose time the fifth time, there’s a problem worth investigating. The technicians who win aren’t just fast, they refine. They stage tools. They plan steps ahead. They eliminate friction. Every job is either repetition… or refinement. Choose refinement and become 1% better everyday. #TechnicianDevelopment #FlatRateLife #SkilledTrades #OperationalExcellence #ContinuousImprovement
I like your speach, you’re missing the part where the manufacturers keep lowering the flat rate hours once they know techs are beating the time. Talk about a death by a thousand cuts

Flat rate is the biggest scam to technicians ever. Left that garbage industry and moved into industrial. Work 1/4 as hard and make 3x a much.

no all it rewards is beating a clock at all cost and cutting corners. Just because a car doesn't come back doesn't always mean it was repaired correctly and with the best workmanship. and we rely on human integrity to make sure its done right

It takes more skill to diag the root cause the first time than it takes to crank out R&R. Flatrate forces techs to more fast which means more misdiagnosis, more comebacks, and wasting more of the customers time & money. My time in the dealerships never helped me acquire diagnostic skills. It's when I left for the independent world where I learned troubleshooting techniques.

Thank you for this information, but I’m honestly scared to get into the flat rate system 😱. Any experienced flat rate techs that are efficient please give me advice so I can survive the flat rate system 🙏

my hurdle everytime is the parts department. I get going and in a great flow and comes to a halt because im missing parts. usually spend about an hour in total walking back and forth to parts department on bigger jobs

Yes but don't see a ton of repeat failures anymore.

the major issue is have is the unpaid part if it takes someone longer. it doesn't matter if your "learning" its unpaid labor and that is slavery. the service department should foot the bill for extra time. eather half rate or full and its up to the management to do performance reviews if techs aren't meeting book times...
