@chatocd: Optimization OCD can assume many forms. One for me is around snow. So I've invented a new term: SnowCD (tm). #ocd #compulsions #optimizationocd #decisions
That was so helpful “it’s about trying to get reassurance about something you can’t get reassurance about”

Oh my goodness, I relate so much. An electrician broke a light fixture in our house by accident and told me to pick out any fixture at any price and he would pay for it. While at first that sounded awesome, it quickly turned into a spiral of hours, HOURS, of honestly torturous and annoying obsession of scouring the internet/stores for the perfect fixture. Taking over my life and letting everything fall to the wayside to get it just right. FOR A LIGHT! It sounds so dumb to write that out but it’s just one example how I take simple things and turn them into a full blown obsession/fixation.😑

do you guys have obsessive thoughts about the meaning of life and stuff? I feel like I’m not ”optimizing” my limited time on this earth and feel bad about it constantly

I feel so seen. Thank you for sharing this. I have spent hours, sometimes DAYS at a time deliberating the most efficient way to maximize relatively inconsequential decisions. It’s horrible being aware of it - I recognize how much time I’m wasting because of decision paralysis. When I DO choose a decision and I choose to accept not having chosen alternative choices, even when I intentionally try not to ruminate, I still can’t help but wish I did it “perfectly” instead. I don’t even believe in the idea of perfection. Most recently, I spent hours rearranging a few plates and bowls on a shelf in my kitchen trying to maximize both the utility/convenience AND aesthetic appeal of each object’s location on the shelf. There was also an underlying belief that once I perfectly optimized the arrangement I would save myself so much time in the future while cooking and cleaning. Pretty ironic. I felt so annoyed with myself while I was doing it but I kept insisting on indulging the compulsion. No matter how it’s arranged I will never be completely satisfied with it. I knew this while I was doing it, and I know it now. But it felt so important.

I don't have OCD, but I do have ADHD, at this kind of reminds me of the 'all-or-nothing' mindset I get trapped in. if I can't do the plan to a T, then I can't do it at all. thanks for sharing your experience, friend. and happy snow day! ❄️🌨

I was diagnosed last year. And even now, I took a lot of time and grief going over this comment to make it the most optimized comment it could be. Ok, Imma stop now.

I get this in the fall so bad! I get so triggered and sometimes find it hard to enjoy the pretty colors. I obsessively try to find the perfect fall spot, see pics online, go on the exact hike and drive and only sometimes feel satisfied 😭

it's ruining reading for me, sadly enough. i just cannot read books that don't fit the moment/weather/season what have you. because there will always be a hypothetical future time they'll fit 'better'. i wonder how many books i'll never get around to because of this

Anyone else struggle with Saturdays? They’re my favorite day of the week and I feel very stressed about making sure they’re worthwhile, if plans come up that might dictate how my day goes and I don’t feel ownership over my day I get very upset and it sucks that I ruin the day for myself

Wait I experience exactly this when it comes to chilly days in FL because they’re my favorite yet so rare. And I often end up making myself more upset than not on those days because of this. Never heard someone verbalize this

Battling uncertainty and sitting with discomfort are wildly problematic for me. It fuels anxiety/panic attacks and creates crazy ocd decision making issues. I think recognition is half the battle. I wish I could solve the other half of the battle 😂

Sometimes when I have a new ocd theme about something good in my life, I take a second to feel grateful I have something so important to me that ocd has latched onto it!
