@inspector_fletch: Are old homes really built better… or are we just romanticizing the survivors? 👀 Everyone says “they don’t build them like they used to.” But are we comparing the BEST of the old builds — the ones that survived 80–100 years — to the average new build going up today? Because the poorly built old houses? They’re already gone. So what do you think… Are old homes actually better? Or are we just seeing survivor bias in real time? 🤔 Let’s hear it 👇 #dontdothat #homeinspections #realestate #fyp

I believe that the craftsmanship made the houses better built. People had pride in their work.

Structurally they were superior back then.. Think of how many ounces there are 150 year old are still standing proud and true.. They have survived storms for a century when the new construction houses on the street keeps getting blown down every time they're the big win.

yes the framing was better made from full size lumber. now days they have turned a 2x4 into a 1.5 x 3.5 but today they have shaved off yet another 32 meaning they are weaker.

They had older, harder lumber back then and it was abundant. They also had pride in their work and craftsmanship was key to a good build.

My 1948 2300sq ft house I own is far more reliable, issue piping, and electrical. Etc. No remodeling. Just reinsulated 10yrs ago when I bought it. My friends house that was built in 2018. 1700sq ft. His electric is at times 2x as much. He's had to replace his roof twice. Same city and weather. He has cracks in his foundation. I have NONE and it's the same foundation from 1948. So these so called regulations etc are only permissions for corpo to cut corners and use thrasher supplies etc.

My house was built in 1890 and it definitely has better "bones" than my sisters house which was built in the 1960s.

I owned a turn of the century home in Buffalo NY, now considering buying a new build in Florida. I think you’re gonna have to ‘tweak’ both.

They were built better by people that showed craftsmanship. Now a days foam trim. Drywall that cant handle a small leak. 1900s wasn't afraid to use real wood. Nowadays im paying half million for house made of paper and pine. plastic pipes. How often do you see a solid door on your inspections. (Honest question at end)
