Great advice Mont and not the typical “Bleu de chanel/YSL Y” starter kit advice. You’ve gradually earned my trust, as I’ve found a lot of parallels between our tastes, after being initially hesitant. Keep it up mane

Been collecting since 1992. I have a wide breadth of fragrances. I really dislike thr “blind buy” culture that has pipped up in this hobby. Go to you boutiques, and dept stores and sample them people! You’ll be surprised how much you can learn from a fragrance consultant at even a decent department store: Personally, I’ll sample a fragrance in store at least three times before I make a purchase. I love testers for scents I’m into but have no issue paying retail for the right scent. Lately I’ve been enjoying Mojave Ghost by Byredo, and Gris Charnel and Tabac Rose by BDK. But I also love lower cost designer scents like Ralphs Club and Safari from Ralph Lauren and Paradigme by Prada.

100% agree. Buy a few, wear them and STOP for a while! Wish I did that. Also, important is there’s a distinction between things you LOVE the smell of and things you actually LOVE TO SMELL LIKE! Try and think about that before buying! 👌

I’ve purposely stopped purchasing new bottles just to enjoy the ones I have. Saves a lot of money and I do revisit a lot of bottles I have that I wasn’t teaching as much for

The only rules are:follow only your nouse and never smell more than 3 fragrances , use samples, spray on skin and walk away. More than 3 is too much and everything can start to smell weird, you can get overwhelmed and confused. Give yourself some time and see how they change. Another day, another try. Buy what you like, not what others tell you to like. That’s all.

Very true. There are a few content creators that I really love their videos, but we have completely different tastes, so I hope people stay true to their own nose and don’t just buy what their favorite creator wears

Everyone will recommend things like BDC, I hate BDC smell is so subjective you have to find what you like not what other people like.

I'd add one more thing: if your budget allows, start checking out niche fragrances right off the bat. I'm not knocking designers, but with a decent sized collection now, I wish I'd have gotten into niche sooner. I have far too many designer fragrances that do just sit and collect dust, because while they are pleasant, once you train your nose, there's a good chance you'll favor fragrances with more complexity or potentially higher quality ingredients, things you'll find more reliably in niche collecting. That also dovetails with what's said here: a small, high-quality collection of curated scents is much better that a menagerie of decent hype-breasts you'll rarely wear.

Definitely never blind buy. I have never blind bought a bottle. Discovery sets and decants. I probably have 20 bottles, and probably 75 decants/samples. Nothing beats being able to give a scent a few good wears before committing.

Do one thing if it’s ur first fragrance. Buy something you can’t afford, buy something amazing that you’ve always wanted. Don’t buy the cheapest one thinking I’m gonna collect all of them. Get the feel of what owning a fragrance you love.
