🚀 The woman standing beside this enormous stack of paper helped make the Moon landing possible. This iconic photograph shows Margaret Hamilton, the computer scientist and software engineer who led the team responsible for the onboard flight software used during NASA’s Apollo missions. And that giant stack beside her? It wasn’t a pile of books. It was printed listings of the Apollo spacecraft’s software. The photograph was taken at MIT in 1969, showing the software developed by Hamilton’s Lunar Module and Command Module flight-software teams. Hamilton’s work became especially important during Apollo 11’s historic landing in 1969. Just minutes before the Lunar Module reached the Moon’s surface, the Apollo Guidance Computer began issuing alarms because it was being overloaded with data. The software Hamilton’s team had designed was able to prioritize the critical tasks and continue operating rather than simply crashing. NASA says this allowed the landing to proceed safely. Her work helped establish software engineering as a major discipline, decades before software became part of virtually every spacecraft, aircraft, phone and computer we use today. She later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 for her contributions to the Apollo program. Sadly, MIT announced this week that Margaret Hamilton died on September 30, 2026, at the age of 90. More than half a century later, her legacy is still everywhere: every time software has to work when failure isn't an option, we are living in part of the world Hamilton helped create. 🌙💻 Margaret Hamilton didn’t just write code for the Moon. She helped define what software engineering could become. #MargaretHamilton #Apollo11 #NASA #MoonLanding #SpaceHistory
