Root rot myth-buster 🌿💀: root rot isn’t a “too much water” problem (I can’t be the only one who thought this ?!? 🤣) it’s an OXYGEN problem.🤯 If your soil stays wet + airless for too long, roots can’t breathe… and that’s when they start to break down. Here’s how I confirm root rot symptoms 🕵️ 👀 Sight: healthy roots = firm + light/creamy (varies by plant). Rot = brown/black, translucent, collapsing 👃 Smell: earthy = ok… sour/swampy/musky = 🚩 🤏 Touch: healthy = firm… rot = squishy/mushy/sloughy Why it happens (aka the plant parent traps): 🚫 watering on a schedule (water by dryness, not days) 🚫 pots with no drainage holes 🚫 soil that’s too dense/holds water forever 🚫 pot too big for the root ball 🚫 low light + cool temps (soil stays wet longer) How to prevent it: ✅ drainage holes = non-negotiable ✅ chunky, airy soil (perlite + bark + quality mix) ✅ pot only 1–2 inches wider than the root ball ✅ bright indirect light + empty runoff (no wet feet) Most rot-prone: succulents, cacti, snake plants, hoya, peperomia, string-of-things More forgiving (in airy soil): pothos, heartleaf philodendron, peace lily, many ferns, monstera + aroids I shared a full 10-slide root rot guide + a repot & rescue decision chart ➜ link in bio 🎁 Drop your plant struggle in the comments, and I’ll cover it 🤗 happy to help us plant parents grow better, together 🫶🌱(and I don’t care if that sounds corny, I mean it) lol 😆 #rootrot #houseplanthelp #plantcaretips #beginnerplants #theplantrovert
