I am also an ex-christian who is now spiritual. I have also said the same thing! : the conventional idea of God was created by humans. Lately, I am inclined to believe that if God exists, they are most likely a neutral being. It's conflicting but I have just decided to exist alongside whatever might be, just being a good person and never letting spirituality cost me my compassion. Also, if God is an infinite being, they cannot be bound by structure (such as religion). An infinite being will manifest itself in countless ways. I'm still open to learning and changing

Science doesn't and hasn't ever claimed to be able to test religions. Religion makes metaphysical claims not material claims. Yeah the problem of evil doesn't disprove suffering. You cannot know good if you don't know evil. The same way we know darkness is the absence of light. Also human ability to understand divine motives, suggesting that our limited, finite perspective cannot conclude that a seemingly pointless evil lacks a greater purpose known only to an omniscient God.
