Do you have a Tudor ‘crush’? I do, and this is the gentleman in question! His name is Ralph Sadler. If you are unfamiliar with this gentleman of the court, I guarantee that once you begin to read about this fascinating character and his eventful life, you will be hooked – as I have been. He was close to or at the centre of, many momentous events that unfolded over his long career at court. From triumph to tragedy, from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Ralph witnessed it all, nearly coming close to ruining himself on three separate occasions. He was brought up in Thomas Cromwell’s household and was given a fine Renaissance education. Ralph grew up to be a well-rounded and accomplished courtier. He started his career as personal secretary to Thomas Cromwell before coming to the attention of Henry VIII. Over his career, he held many court appointments and served on the Privy Council. His distinguished career is most associated with his involvement in Scottish affairs, culminating in his being part of the jury that condemned Mary, Queen of Scots. However, he seems to have been a kind man and devoted to his wife and family. You can read more in a blog I wrote a couple of years ago, which looks at some of the highlights of Ralph Sadler’s career and the home he built in the sought-after Tudor parish of Hackney in Middlesex - the link is in my bio. For members of The Ultimate Guide, I have just published a write-up of his life and tomb. Let me know if you share my fascination with Sir Ralph or have a different Tudor ‘crush’. 😉 #tudorhistory #henryviii #maryqueenofscots #thomascromwell #ralphsadler #tudortok
