The “why is it in his vocabulary” crowd having zero self awareness that it’s in their vocabulary too

“He can still apologise” HE’S BEEN APOLOGISING HIS WHOLE LIFE, HE SHOULDNT HAVE TO! Harm without intent can exist, but it’s not a slip up, it’s not an accident that caused harm, it’s DISABILITY. The push for fair treatment seems to quickly slip out of minds when its disability

John Davidson left the baftas early because he felt terrible for making people feel uncomfortable. I truly don't understand all the hate he's getting, he can't stop himself saying those words. However, The BBC had control of the editing.

People want him to apologise for the impact of something he had no choice over, but they are choosing to use words which have a negative impact for people with disabilities.
Also yeah the "if a disabled person did XYZ wouldn't you expect them to apologise?" scenarios are wild cos every time I think "no, i wouldn't expect them to apologise, because i understand it's not their fault"

I’m more mad about the BBC not censoring the word, when they censored swear words and cut out a pro Palestine speech.

I have empathy for the impact and hurt of its usage, and I have empathy for the man and his disability. But the sheer refusal to educate ourselves about the condition is actually sending me. People straight up saying they REFUSE to watch the movie.

👏👏👏Also on the “where did he hear the word?” It’s a reminder of the infantilisation of disabled people 🙄 We’re adults with adult vocabularies.

i am not black it’s not my place to discuss the apology issue but being disabled myself (ocd/autism/adhd), i find it so disturbing how agressive people get to want him to beg for forgiveness, being removed etc. Do people have any idea how much of disabled life revolves around apologizing for things we cannot control? Around monitoring every single second of our life to not find ourselves in these situations. People’s reaction is terrifying.

The people to blame are the broadcasters. They’ve turned it into a disabled people v POC debate when they were on a 2 hour delay and could have just cut it

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect him to apologize, if you do something on accident (or bc of something you can’t control) that doesn’t mean you don’t apologize because regardless it caused harm

why does it matter if he meant it or not, it can still humiliate or upset someone? will the sky fall down if the response is “i’m sorry, i have tourette’s, it’s out of my control, i wish i could promise it won’t happen again but i can’t, please be patient with me, maybe you can watch the movie”. what’s with all of this stubbornness and aggro? refusing to apologise is not right

I imagine: "What is the absolute worst thing I could say in this moment? " And then your brain makes you say exactly that. Its like not thinking about a pink elephant, but it's just the most reprehensible thing you could say.

There seems to be a massive divide on how Americans are viewing this and how British are viewing it, maybe because having more widespread awareness of something leads to more contextualised understanding, I.e disabilities and their complexities

I am noticing a bit of a USA/UK divide - UK seem to take a more nuanced approach.

The semantics behind the slurs are just ridiculous. Like, who's actually gonna feel better by making a spectacle out of a disabled man and a "I'm sorry you felt that way" apology when we know he didn't mean it in the first place.
