Someone doesn’t even have to be overtly mean about it to make you feel unsafe. I clocked every time my mother was trying to “gently” steer me away from something. There is no way to hide it from a child when you have prejudices. They’ll just find a way to get the thing behind your back. But the shame never goes away.

I work as a face painter. This exact scenario happens ALL THE TIME. Especially at events where I offer glitter. "No, you don't want glitter" -mom "But I do mom" -boy. "Well you want blue, right?" -mom "I want pink..." -boy When it comes to a matter of taste and preference, I pretend I can't hear the parents. When you sit in my chair, my whole attention is on you, and you're the one I want to make happy.
