I just heard some really great advice your first hire should be a journeyman. By hiring a journeyman instead of a green apprentice, you gain a skilled coworker who can actually help carry the load. More importantly, they can be left alone to manage a site while you tend to the "business" side of the business. When a company is tiny just you and one helper hiring an apprentice means 50% of your workforce is untrained. Instead of scaling your productivity, you end up babysitting and training, which slows down your growth

Visit an attorney and have them draft an employment contract. It should help protect you. Nothing is perfect, but it may help. Get it as a fill in the blank template, so each time you shouldn't have that expense. You may find them online as well.

It’s frustrating for sure. Now they’re going to go somewhere else and the new company will think they found the unicorn apprentice who is so intuitive and smart and a good worker. Just give yourself a pat on the back and try the next one

Try training a journeyman in motor controls and they leave to bend conduit. Can’t compete against the large corporations paying $20 an hour over scale.

ive trained a lot of apprentices. in my entire career id say over 50. less than 5 actually made it to become a journeyman. and none of them stayed except 1. the best one. dont get discouraged. apply for your grant for signing them and wage substidy. stings a lot less 😅
