I’ve never had to deconstruct from religion because I wasn’t raised in a faith tradition. But my practice of optimistic nihilism has clung to this epitaph I saw on a headstone for a husband and wife. It feels like a final exhale that joins a breeze that embraces the world: “Here we lie by consent after 57 years, 2 months and 20 days, sojourning through life, awaiting nature’s immutable laws to return us back to the elements of the universe of which we were first composed.”

I've been atheist my whole life and I still don't feel healthily adjusted to the concept.

When I think about death, even outside of religion, I try to imagine what it was like before I was born. Which is impossible. But that non-conceptual state is what every one of us came out of. Should we be afraid to return to it?

I let go of my faith about 3 years ago and I feel so much better. I feel free to live MY life… I have stage 4 cancer and I feel much better in my life not worrying about finality and pleasing a cruel God for eternal life… it was hard changing prayers place in my life but I did it!!

Could you talk about fear of freedom more? I've heard you talk extensively about the others, but not so much about fear of freedom. I'd like to understand it better.

Sometimes I’m really jealous of people deconstructing nowadays. Not that it’s a process to ever be envied. But when I went through it 20 years ago there was so little info or community. I just cried about death for a year or so… angrily and embarrassingly loud. No regrets.

I think it might be a natural wiring for me, i never feared death. when I used to be spiritual I even used to be super curious about what might happen after death. now I just don't care. I just live in the present, when I die I will no longer experience the world so there's nothing to be afraid of 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I find it difficult to accept that suffering might not have any inherent purpose or meaning. My mind can’t accept that possibility, and I end up spiraling when I think about it.

Honestly this is one of the things that makes life so precious. My capacity to grieve shows my capacity to love. When death is final it encourages us to be present with our loved ones and loved activities. You can’t take it with you so love it while you can as fully as you can! <3

I oscillate between being scared of nonexistence and then sometimes feeling like WHATEVER can’t do anything about it idc. I try to remind myself that I’m instinctually scared because I’m a human and evolution creates an urge for survival. But outside of myself/people it’s a neutral situation

I have less fear for my death than the fear of how it will affect my loved ones, and this causes me to feel guilty and ashamed.

I don’t fear death, I just don’t welcome it. Secular all my life, as a side note.

the book Staring at the Sun by Irvin Yalom was life changing for me in regards to my connection with death. he explores the fear of leaving nothing behind really well

Also examie why you are afraid. Most of the time you are afraid because you were told to be.

its not so much fear of my own death (that I am more than comfortable with) but of those having to deal with it when I am not here and not having the level of consciousness and enlightenment about it like I did.

Do you think people who leave other belief structures (like identity-based politics) face a similar feeling of existentialism?

i used to think people who questioned everything were just negative. then i read book Hidden Rulers Exposed by Daniel Cyler and realized they were just paying attention. this book calmly shows you what's happening behind every major event and decision that affects your life. my barber wouldn't stop talking about it. he was right
