Before the Bible: The Ancient Stories It Was Built On The more we study the ancient world, the clearer it becomes that many stories in the Bible grew out of older myths circulating long before the biblical texts were written. Ancient Israel lived between cultural giants Mesopotamia, Egypt & Canaan & their narratives naturally absorbed themes from those civilizations. The Moses story reflects motifs found in earlier legends. The tale of an infant placed in a river to escape danger closely mirrors the earlier Mesopotamian story of Sargon of Akkad, who was also set afloat as a baby and destined for greatness. Elements of the Exodus plagues, a sea split by divine power, and a prophet confronting a king fit the pattern of liberation myths & divine-warrior traditions common in the region. Stories like Daniel in the lions’ den resemble older protective-hero & court-legends found in Babylonian literature, where righteous individuals survive deadly trials through divine favor. The motif of being thrown to beasts & miraculously spared appears in multiple Near Eastern traditions long before Daniel was written. Even prophets like Elijah draw from earlier mythic patterns: calling down fire from heaven, multiplying food & raising the dead are actions also associated with miracle-working figures in Ugaritic and Phoenician traditions. Elijah’s ascent into the sky in a whirlwind reflects a type of legendary “heavenly departure” found in stories about ancient kings and demigods. & the miracles of Jesus echo narrative forms found throughout the Greco-Roman world. Healing the sick, casting out spirits, calming storms & raising the dead are all miracle-types well documented in Hellenistic biographies & Jewish wonder-worker traditions. These stories served to communicate a figure’s spiritual authority, not necessarily to record historical events. By comparing these traditions, we see how ancient authors reshaped familiar stories to express new religious ideas, showing how myths evolve, adapt & continue to influence cultures across time. #mythology #theology #scripture
