Watching your own heart beat in real time is genuinely unhinged. Like… you forget that thing is just in there, working overtime, doing cardio without your consent. This is my left ventricle. That’s my mitral valve. That’s the right side of my heart. All of it just casually on a screen while a doctor calmly explains that everything looks “pretty unremarkable,” which, in medicine, is exactly what you want. Because the problem with things like POTS is that the weird stuff doesn’t always show up on command. It comes and goes. One minute you’re fine, the next your heart rate is 150 while you’re standing in the shower and your Apple Watch is congratulating you on completing a workout you absolutely did not sign up for. Cut to me wiping off the ultrasound gel saying I feel like I just got jizzed on — because apparently that’s how I metabolize medical vulnerability and nervous system stress. Humor first, processing later. Final slide: the heart rate monitor I’ll be wearing on my chest for the next two weeks so we can actually catch what’s happening in real life, not just when I’m lying still in a quiet room being “normal.” This is what chronic illness diagnostics really look like — long waits, lots of testing, “everything looks fine,” and then more monitoring anyway. Equal parts relief and exhaustion. If you’re navigating POTS, medical testing, body anxiety, or the surreal experience of becoming extremely aware of your internal organs, join my community for only $5.55. We talk about the science, the systems, and the WTF moments that don’t make it into a doctor’s note. Link’s in bio. — Katie Dickieson, M.Eng, Q.C., H.N.
