@trustbutverify2024: Was Jesus born under King Herod or during the census of Quirinius? Matthew 2 says Herod. Luke 2 says Quirinius. Historical records place Herod’s death around 4 BCE and Quirinius’ governorship around 6 CE, roughly a 10 year gap. That timeline creates a serious problem for the nativity story. Did Joseph register twice? Was Mary pregnant for 10 years? Or is this a clear biblical contradiction? In this debate clip, faith collides with verifiable history. If external historical sources conflict with scripture, which do you trust and why? godsfavorite :
Nope we know Yeshua was born during rain of King Herod. Luke's time could refer to any census before the official Roman one.

Let's clear this up - There is no formal contradiction between Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Luke. Matthew states Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great, which places the birth before Herod’s death (commonly dated 4 BC, though that date is historically reconstructed, not infallibly fixed). Luke says the birth occurred during the “first” census when Publius Sulpicius Quirinius was governing Syria. Luke never mentions AD 6; that association comes from Josephus’ later description of a well-known provincial census. Calling it the “first” naturally allows for more than one census, meaning Luke may be distinguishing an earlier registration from the later AD 6 event. The Greek term for “governing” does not require Quirinius to have been sole legate at that exact moment; it can refer to exercising authority in the region, which allows for an earlier administrative or military role. Additionally, Judea under Herod was a client kingdom, not yet a Roman province, so an enrollment under Augustus could have occurred earlier and differed from the later provincial census after AD 6. A true contradiction would require the Gospels to state mutually exclusive dates (e.g., before 4 BC and after AD 6), but neither text does so. The perceived problem arises from later historical correlations, not from the literal claims themselves. Cheers

I have told you earlier that contradictions is not when you take two accounts speaking about different things about one thing but when the same writer is saying different things about one thing.

Who cares? All that matters is that Jesus still speaks to us through scripture ... as he did today to me! I was led to read Jesus' message that I had no idea that I would be replying to someone online about the very topic that Jesus showed me today. He LIVES! .A ll that matters!!

Don’t forget Jesus didn’t live only 2 years Breh. He was around 30 when he was crucified and you’re forgetting Herod died not long after Jesus’ birth

Sean Ornery :
Publius Sulpicius Quirinius likely governed Syria twice, a theory used to reconcile the Gospel of Luke’s account of Jesus' birth (c. 4 BC) with the well-documented census of AD 6–7. The Lapis Tiburtinus inscription suggests a second term, likely putting him in charge of an earlier, local census during Herod’s reign, supported by scholars like Sir William Ramsay.
