@gir_20166: I've seen people use this whole situation as an excuse to be either racist or abelist and I'm seeing the lack of intersectionality in this discussion. So I'm curious to hear from someone in both the disabled and Black communities to give their two cents. Ngl it was uncomfortable to watch but I'm trying to be understanding since I don't have Tourette's. It's very conflicting. #bafta #tourettes #michaelbjordon #disabledcommunity #blackcommunity
He did apologize btw, he said he’s horrified and feels awful and wants to remind everyone that he WARNED baftas about his condition and they not only told him it would be okay; they assured him anything he shouted would be deleted only to sit him DIRECTLY next to a microphone pointed straight at him. BAFTAs is the one to blame in this, yall

The issue is that when you say something that hurts people and you didnt mean to hurt them, you apologize. It’s genuinely so simple.

Are we for real now blaming someone with Tourette’s syndrome? Oh ok. Well done America, y’all cancel anything but people on Epstein files

the black creators w tourettes ive seen (only abt 3) have all tried to explain that specifically how tics work is making you say the worst possible thing and how it is uncontrollable but ppl dont listen ig

If someone called me a slur because of a tic and tried to apologize, I would literally refuse their apology (as in they dont need to apologize for it) because it's out of their control. If someone hurt me with their car because they had a heart attack, then no, they do not owe me an apology. They couldn't control their heart attack.

I think in the event that it genuinely was a tic, then he should not be shamed for saying it. He should be shamed for not apologizing immediately after though, and the airing crew should be shamed for not cutting it out when they cut out so many other errors. people are saying that he left and didn’t even accept his award, but that is the bare minimum after yelling, a racial slur at a very public event.

i’m black but i don’t have tourette’s, i 100% believe it was involuntary, my issue is with BBC and the network for still airing that when it wasn’t live & they could’ve edited it out…they knew wtf they were doing.

It was the organizers' fault 100%. He raised concerns about being seated next to a microphone, and they assured him they'd mute any of his tics. They did not, despite being able to catch and mute other things, like someone saying "free Palestine".

As someone who doesn't fit the criteria, I'll still speak out.
Some people just want to create a scandal from the start and are just looking for an excuse.
So they found it.

If a single word is upsetting people this bad even when it was done without malice — MAYBE no one should be saying that word in the first place.

John didn’t mean to, but it still hurt Micheal and Delroy and that matters too. An apology is owed, that is just what’s right. I stand with all 3

Hi! I’m black and have this type of TS (coprolalia, the swearing one, although I don’t say slurs) and I think that Delroy is being hit *way* too hard and people don’t understand that you can’t hold tics back or it’ll make it *worse*. Doing so is painful and can only heighten the outburst after. Do I think he should apologize? Yes. I apologize when I flip people off, and explain I wasn’t thinking about them or trying to be vulgar.

Yall he doesn’t owe anyone an apology. He can’t help it. Thats like the whole internet getting mad as someone with severe autism throwing a tantrum. THEY CANT HELP IT. The fact that he apologized at all speaks volumes. Imagine how he is feeling right now. Probably incredibly embarrassed and betrayed by the editors for not cutting that part out.

Plenty of black people with Tourette’s have spoke on this, they’re just being silenced. They have to turn comments off because of the threats they are getting.

he shouldn't apologize to anyone but Michael and delroy for the potential of them not knowing it was a tic and for the embarrassment. the average adult should understand it is out of his control and if they don't, they shouldn't form an opinion on it
