We don’t have to give him a pass but we can at least not contribute to misinformation about coprolalia. Black folk with the condition have been speaking up explaining how it works and they are being ignored. We need to wrestle with the complexity of this: tics don’t indicate politics and cannot be controlled; racism doesn’t need to be intentional to be racism so the tics were racist; the Black people in the audience should absolutely not have had to have dealt with the n-word being thrown around just because it was someone with a disability; most people are only defending Davidson because they don’t care about racism and we will never see this level of disability advocacy again; a white man being at the forefront of a case for disability advocacy doesn’t mean we should downplay it because the optics aren’t ideal. We have every right to be angry about this situation and don’t have to forgive him but people are going to lengths to dismiss coprolalia being a real thing (tagging “it’s a disability” at the end of dismissing how it works doesn’t undo that).
