This is such a forgotten thing to do. Hubby does ours every few months. We checked into an Airbnb once and it was soooo gross we had to clean them.

if you are cleaning an HVAC unit, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING WET. you might contract legionnaires disease. not likely in a home unit but keep in mind

Unfortunately, cleaning your air conditioner filters incorrectly can damage the mesh and let larger particles into the system, creating a breeding ground for mould. The most effective way to clean them is to take them outside and rinse them with a garden hose, spraying from the back of the filter.
