Y’all… we need to talk about what happened on I-95 the other night near Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach. Amy Arlene Baker, 43, and her husband were heading home from a boat party down in the Fort Lauderdale Port Marina area. You know the kind of classic South Florida boat party — sun, music, a few drinks, good times out on the water, then everybody piles back into the car for the long ride north. Except this particular ride home turned into something straight out of a Florida Man highlight reel… only this time it was Florida Woman doing the damage. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and the probable cause affidavit, the couple started arguing about “past problems within their relationship.” Things got heated pretty quick. Baker allegedly started calling her husband some real colorful names, including a certain homophobic slur that still makes half of Broward County clutch their pearls while the other half just shrugs and says “welcome to South Florida.” He fired back with what might be the most Florida response possible in that moment: “Who is the one with the felony?” That, apparently, was the tipping point. She slapped him across the face while he was driving. About two minutes later she grabbed his head with both hands and bit down on his right ear hard enough to tear a portion of it clean off. The husband told troopers she then laughed as the blood started pouring down the side of his neck. He said he was initially in shock, looked at the amount of blood, and just pointed the car toward the nearest hospital — West Boca Medical Center. Their 1-year-old and 7-year-old were sitting right there in the back seat the entire time. Baker told police she was concerned he had been drinking, claimed he hit her first and told her to shut up, and said she simply “lost control.” He denied ever laying a hand on her during the whole argument. Troopers looked at both sides of the story, determined she was the primary aggressor, and arrested her. She was charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability and two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. And here’s the detail that has half of South Florida shaking their heads at the cookout and the other half already turning it into group chat gold: after the bite, she picked up the piece of ear that came off and handed it to the hospital staff herself so they could try to reattach it. The husband was still waiting for surgery when the troopers took her into custody at the hospital. Friends who had been following them from the boat party in a separate vehicle took the kids for the night so they wouldn’t have to sit through the rest of the drama. The Department of Children and Families got notified, as expected any time something like this happens in front of little ones. Look, every relationship has its rough patches. Some couples argue about money. Some argue about whose turn it is to clean the boat or who left the cooler open.
