2 years ago I sat down at the desk and decided to go all in on cybersecurity. No degree, no roadmap, just started studying. A+ was first. Passed it. Then Security+. Then Network+. After that I applied to jobs and got a simple IT job building and configuring cybersecurity servers for the DOD. Then a few months in I then decided to go for the CySA+, PenTest+, and CASP+. While I was grinding certifications I was also building. GitHub projects, homelabs, anything to actually learn the skills behind the acronyms. After around 9 months at my IT job a CEO reached out to me on LinkedIn after seeing one of my projects and offered me a job. Actually build the backend of CISA’s Annual CTF Presidents Cup platform and I was the main backend engineer with the most overall contributions as well. But the thing that meant the most wasn’t the job — it was realizing how bad the study resources were for people trying to do what I did.
