A trading setup can have multiple confirmations and still end in a stop loss. This is something that's easy to overlook when studying price action trading strategies. We often see chart examples where everything lines up perfectly, price moves straight towards the take-profit target and the trade looks obvious in hindsight. But real market behaviour isn't always that straightforward. In this breakdown, we look at different bearish trading setups around previous highs and liquidity areas, including an example where the short idea gets invalidated. The first thing worth understanding is what a liquidity sweep actually tells us. When price pushes above a previous high, it may trigger stop losses from traders who were short and attract breakout buyers expecting the market to continue higher. If price then moves back below that high, it can suggest that the breakout is failing. But there's an important distinction between a failed breakout and a confirmed bearish reversal. Price moving back below a previous high doesn't guarantee that sellers will maintain control. We can also look for additional information from fair value gaps (FVGs), inverse fair value gaps (IFVGs), candle closes and market structure. For example, if price trades below a previously bullish fair value gap, some traders interpret that as a potential change in the behaviour of that area. A break of a rising trendline can also provide another reason to question the strength of the bullish move. However, neither of these signals guarantees that the market will continue lower. This is why the invalidation level matters. Before considering a short trade, we need to know what price would have to do to prove that our original idea is no longer valid. If price continues pushing higher and breaks through the level where our bearish idea should fail, we can't simply assume that the market must eventually reverse. The original setup may no longer be valid. The later chart example also highlights another important part of the process: identifying potential downside targets. Previous swing lows and areas where price has reacted before can provide possible objectives for a short position. But they should be considered alongside the entry and stop loss, not simply used to manufacture an attractive risk-to-reward ratio. A 1:3 setup drawn on TradingView doesn't automatically mean the trade has a positive expectancy. That depends on much more than the distance between the entry, stop loss and take profit. The biggest takeaway is that liquidity sweeps, fair value gaps and market structure are tools for interpreting price action. They're not guarantees of what price will do next. A losing trade doesn't necessarily mean the analysis was unreasonable, just as one winning trade doesn't prove a strategy is profitable. What matters is having a repeatable process, defined risk and a clear understanding of when your trading idea is no longer valid. Follow for more price action trading, technical analysis and chart breakdowns. #PriceActionTrading #LiquiditySweep #IFVG #MarketStructure #RiskManagement
