@mckenzie.mack: I want to retire at 40 with $2.5 million! This is my FIRE Number—let’s calculate yours! (I still use 4% bc I don’t plan to actually stop making money at 40, I just want the freedom of not NEEDING to make a bunch)

So you want to retire at 40 and you are using 30 years….so you plan to die at 70?!?!? How about using a life expectancy of 85. You need 45 years of expenses

What are you doing to tackle the sequence of returns risk with retiring at 40 with only 2.5M

Begging you to talk about the incredibly niche topic of how to calculate your FIRE number when you have a pension but want to retire before you can collect that pension 🙏

Are you still doing those portfolios for people? I want to figure out what I should be doing if BOTH me and my husband will collect a substantial pension when we are 60/65 but we will stop working at age 50/55 and I want to work PT when I am 40/45 (hubby will work FT till 55) we are a teacher and paramedic.

Just to make sure i understand what you’re doing: the 100k is in future value right? I.E. If you’re 30 now, and you want to retire at 40 and have a yearly expenses total of 100,000. That would be the same as having a salary today of 78,119.84 before taxes right?

I’ve always preached that a 3.5% withdrawal rate may be wise depending on how early you retire! I plan on retiring in my 40s and will be using that withdrawal rate

I wish there was a fire calculator for pre and post tax investments. I am 90% Roth. I also have a pension to factor in too.

I’ve never understood the obsession with the 4% rule, 5% or even 5.5% is very doable for most people. 4% was a number created where you wouldn’t run out of money during the worst market conditions in history. The odds of that scenario playing out exactly when you retire are basically zero, and if they do, it’s very easy to lower your expenses and live conservatively for a couple of years until markets start to climb again. It’s okay to use as an ultra conservative milestone but there’s almost no reason to actually hold off on retirement until you achieve a 4% rule based fire number.

I’m assuming people wanna retire as soon as they can. For sure. I’m not sure your calculations are correct

How come you don’t need more since you’re retiring early? You mentioned the calculation works for a 30-year retirement, but your retirement would hopefully be 40-60 years

What about healthcare as you age?Not just insurance but live in care or needing a home- a lot of this isn’t included in health insurance. My grandfather had live in care- that is around 100k per year- he had it for 10 years. No judgement just curious

How does this plan work in a partnership? Are you just calculating this for yourself or with your s/o?

But 30 years if you retire at 40 only gets you to 70. People live long past that now
