The animal didn't display typical aggression, but grabbed Smits's hand and didn't let go for three hours. Willy understood that any attempt to escape or use force would provoke an attack, which could be fatal. All this time, he remained calm, trying not to make any sudden movements or look the animal directly in the eye. Eventually, the orangutan lost interest and released him. Who is Willy Smits? He founded the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS), the world's largest organization dedicated to saving these primates. Smits became famous for his Samboja Lestari project, in which he literally restored a tropical forest on the site of an arid desert, creating a habitat for hundreds of rescued orangutans.
