I removed myself for six years after reaching exhaustion and we recently had a conversation where she told me she didn’t take it personally because she knows it’s not about her. Is there any hope for that level of denial from a parent? Would love any tips for navigating that.

After going no contact for years, I let my dad back in my life. And it did not go well. Now I’m dealing with the abandonment all over again. They don’t change. I wish they would but they don’t.

The only hope is to disengage. They will victimize themselves or play whatever card they need to in order to keep the status quo and avoid accountability.

I’m the child in the situation and that statement bothers me, because I think my mom’s pain over me is actually her abandonment/abuse wounds from HER mother being triggered. That’s the reason it’s so intense for her…because it feels the same as being a three year old left screaming into the void. It’s not my responsibility (nor am I able) to heal it, and I certainly think she’s responsible for the destruction of the bond I had with her as a child and causing me the same kind of pain she has handed down to her, but I don’t think claiming she’s in less pain is realistic, based on what I know about trauma and child development.

There is no way this can be true. My teenagers are experiencing parental alienation and they reject me don’t txt me back say horrible things to me. And it literally kills me dead. They act like they couldn’t care less if they ever see me again. There’s no way in hell they are in pain the way I am. No way.

This got so hard to find the line for the boundary for me because the parent had a terminal illness. Everything was cranked up to 11 and time limited. I wish I had tried less.

can you plz help me deal with being around my dad? ive done sooo much work. including family system stuff and removing myself from the system/role that was forced on me. problem is, im disabled. cant 100% cut off my dad. he is exhausting. he is always toxic. and telling him he hurts me makes him just walk away, hang up or ignore me.for the most part, I minimize our convos and keep them to text and email because of this. some things have been happening that need phone calls and in person meetings lately. my nervous system is so messed up from it. i have strong boundaries. he is just such a train wreck. and he has no empathy for how his behavior impacts others.

I wouldn’t say that. My parents have a much deeper connection to me than I have to them 🤷♀️

Yes after trying to navigate these types of dynamics over 52 years that I met #relationaldeath and it was just over. It is all about boundaries but after over a half century of expending energy like this I just didn’t survive it and it was just overs I am #beyondnocontact. You speak on this very well💯💯💯

You’re 100% right. Also I have adopted and non adopted parents and it’s hilarious to me none of them can guilt me with the “You only have 1 dad” shtick. One of the few perks of being adopted 😂😂

My mom used to like sending paragraphs of texts berating me and one day I told her I’d be blocking her number until the next day as I wouldn’t tolerate her harassing me. I haven’t recieved paragraph texts since then!

I feel this so hard. I think that codependency is an apt description. I have no doubt that I was my mom’s best friend for over a decade. She attached to me after my older sister got married and left. She called me all the time, depended on me, and gave me support. Trying to set boundaries with her was destined to fail simply because she was not capable of recognizing my right to have boundaries. When I pulled myself out of the equation, just for a break from my horrible dad, she reacted as though I had physically attacked her.
