@corycalendinemd: Bone Cement Shortage? . A global supply disruption is sending concern through orthopaedic care across the UK, and thousands of patients awaiting hip and knee replacement surgery are now caught in the crossfire. Bone cement is a critical medical material used to anchor artificial joint implants securely to a patient's existing bone structure. Without it, the majority of cemented hip and knee replacement procedures simply cannot be performed. According to reports, the NHS relies on this material for the bulk of ~250,000 joint replacement procedures performed in England each year. . The crisis stems from a packaging fault at a major international production facility, which temporarily halted manufacturing at its primary site. While production has since restarted, the disruption has left the NHS with an estimated 2 wks of available supply, followed by a projected gap of 6-8 wks with severely limited stock. NHS England has issued urgent guidance directing hospitals to redirect available cement supplies toward trauma and emergency cases, including patients with fractured hips and other time-sensitive injuries. Planned, elective procedures are being postponed indefinitely. Health campaigners have called the news a devastating setback for patients who have already endured extended waiting periods. Charities representing arthritis and older adult populations are urging rapid government action and asking hospitals to communicate proactively with affected patients. Importantly, not all joint replacement surgeries require bone cement. Cementless, or press-fit, implants are a well-established alternative used in appropriately selected patients. This shortage is a timely reminder of why surgical technique options and implant selection flexibility matter enormously in orthopedic care. #bonecement #orthopedicsurgeon . I had a total hip replacement in January 2025. I feel sorry for the ones who are having their treatment cancelled due to this. How can they run out of cement?

It happened right here in California to my daughter who is in agonizing pain with a partially dislocated hip due to the nurses’strike at Kaiser. Her surgery was canceled. Might be another month.
