Culver City is a dynamic, independent municipality located on the Westside of Los Angeles County, California. Completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles, it balances an urban, walkable downtown district with quiet, family-friendly residential neighborhoods. Culver City was founded by real estate developer Harry H. Culver in 1913 and officially incorporated on September 20, 1917. Strategically located between downtown Los Angeles and the coast, it quickly earned the nickname "The Heart of Screenland" by becoming a global mecca for the early motion picture industry. Long before European arrival, the area was inhabited by the Tongva (or Gabrielino) Indigenous people. The land was later claimed by Spain and partitioned into ranchos, including Rancho La Ballona, which would eventually become the foundation for the city. Harry Culver deliberately targeted film pioneers to build the city's economy, successfully persuading legendary producer Thomas Ince to open a studio there in 1915. Like many suburban developments in the early 20th century, Culver City was originally founded as a "sundown town," with Harry Culver promoting the area as a "white city" and restricting real estate sales. Following World War II, the city diversified its economy, eventually expanding into petroleum production and later transitioning into a major hub for technology, video game development, and digital media. Starting in the late 1990s and accelerating through the 2000s, Culver City launched an aggressive revitalization campaign. Downtown's historic core was transformed into a pedestrian-friendly district packed with acclaimed restaurants, theaters, and art galleries. Today, Culver City has seamlessly merged its entertainment roots with the contemporary tech landscape. While Sony Pictures remains a massive physical anchor in the center of town, massive corporate campuses for Amazon Studios, Apple TV+, and HBO have moved in, cementing the neighborhood's status as a premier creative and technological powerhouse in Southern California.
