Cash for clunkers destroyed cheap and reliable cars. It makes me sick man. I saw so many great, and now desirable, vehicles scrapped.

I had a 2015 VW Jetta TDI that got at least 45mpg. Government shut that down really quick. Funny how that works.

The chase for *efficiency* is probably more accurate. Every bit of efficiency they gain they’re turning around and spending it on features that consume more energy. Look at the current draw of a car when it’s powered on but the engine isn’t running. Throw an amp clamp on any late model car and see how much electrical load the engine is being asked to support. Now add dual zone climate control, gps, ADAS systems, satellite radios, giant touch screen displays… the quest for better MPG was supplanted by the quest for more infotainment and creature comforts.

In the 70s and 80s, we had Corollas, Fiestas, B210s, etc that pushed 40mpg with a carburetted engine. Why can't we have that now?

Meanwhile my 2025 Toyota Camry XSE is getting 45 MPG, has 122,000 trouble free miles, and their eCVT transmissions are almost bulletproof. I highly doubt there was a full sized car, with good looks and style, getting 45-50 mpg 20-30 years ago. Toyota figured it out. Everyone else just has to as well. 🤷♂️💯

Same exact thing happening in hvac. Systems more efficient, but break down constantly.

A 1970's Diesel VW Rabbit pickup got almost 50 mpg.

And the lithium battery in EV isn't exactly climate friendly either.

I don’t care about 1-2 more mpg I want a vehicle that will last me 15-20yrs. That will do more good for the planet than a few mpg and a vehicle that is trash in 5-8yrs.

I’d love to see someone market their vehicle as “RELIABLE” screw the gas mileage and computer screen this car is guaranteed to last you 200,000 miles etc etc

This wouldn't even be an issue if the vehicles hadn't gotten bigger and bigger and bigger. We wouldn't need such efficient engines if the vehicles were lighter and more aerodynamic

I’m convinced that a lot of them actually get worse mileage. Due to turbos and people having lead foots.

There is nothing free in engineering, everything is a trade off. They get a few MPG and meet the government mandate, we get VCT, AFM/DFM, EGR, loose rings, thin oil, auto shutoff, etc. All things that make the vehicle worse in the long run.
