I once heard someone say "Designing bear proof dumpsters is difficult because you have to design them to keep out the smartest bears, but be functional for even the dumbest person."

As a gamer of 30 years I beg you. Don't simplify games. Let them figure it out. It must be challenging. Let them use thair brain. It is frustrating when the game is playing itself.

unironically this is how most people who never played games before think about things... they refuse to use the game to learn new things and so they automatically dismiss anything they learn in the game and keep nothing in their memory. They will do anything they can to reinforce that games are not fun and that they are a waste of time

I always thought it was funny how Valve is known for their QA testing and Portal is kind of just one big QA test

Safe to say he's not thinking with portals... There is a series on YouTube where guy makes his wife i think play various video games. it's called gaming for non gamers or something similar. That really opened my eyes how we the players learn without trying and how those learned mechanics or design clues carry over to other games. So on one hand i get how someone completely new to the games can be painfully clueless. But on the other hand, in this scenario shown I'm really surprised how can you just miss the core mechanic when it is spoon fed to you. Portal is one of great showcases how tutorials should be made and as a whole it's a great game for "new gamers" to teach them core principles of game mechanics as a lot of them carry over to other games pretty seamlessly.

In a university class my team were building and playtesting a 2D stealth platformer, and one playtester would just run directly at the enemies shooting at them instead of using any of the movement options the game had already taught them to use, and our professor told us we had to accommodate for that. I wanted to scream
